A portrait of a warrior of the American Plains, Shadow on the Sun wears a robe of black bear hide, his face and hair streaked with red vermillion, a cross of German silver (also known as nickel silver) hangs around his neck. The origin of the cross is rooted in Hispanic Christianity and became a popular trade item among tribes. The Plains Indians, it served as a personal ornament, it’s meaning was recognizable only by the wearer, perhaps representing a personal “Medicine”, or symbolizing a special horror, or merely ornamental. The name Shadow on the Sun, demonstrates the importance of the warrior with his people, his stature so formidable, as to cast a shadow on the sun.
